Nokia the former powerhouse in the smartphone industry is set for a big comeback 2017, with the D1C being one of its first Android-powered smartphones. Espoo, Finland-based HMD Global has signed a 10-year brand licensing contract with Nokia where it will create new Nokia branded phones, and will own Nokia’s existing range of feature phones that are sold across the world.

“With a leading position in feature phones market already, HMD has a significant global foothold including Americas, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa, India and China from day one,” the company said in a statement.

“Driven by the extremely positive reception we have received since HMD was announced earlier this year, we’re excited about building the next chapter for Nokia phones,” CEO Arto Nummela said.

HMD Global and Foxconn completed the acquisition of Microsoft mobile phone business – including feature phones and smartphones – under which Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) will manufacture the devices. While HMD controls sales, marketing and distribution of the Nokia brand for smartphones, the manufacturing operations were sold by Microsoft to a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Co. The two companies will collaborate on so-called feature phones.

“I’m sure millions of Nokia fans will be excited to see the new products,” said Brad Rodrigues, interim president of Nokia Technologies.

“With our passionate team, start up attitude, a brand with a 95% worldwide awareness and a unique, asset light partnership approach, we believe we are perfectly placed to forge a new way in mobile,” said Florian Seiche, President of HMD Global.

According to NokiaPowerUser’s reliable source, the two models of the Android-powered Nokia D1C will differ in display size, RAM and camera. The smaller 5-inch display variant of the phone will be packing 2GB RAM and feature a 13MP rear shooter. It will also be cheaper than the 5.5-inch variant (1080 p resolution), which will come with 3GB RAM and a 16MP primary camera.

Nokia D1C will be powered by a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 processor coupled with an Adreno 505 GPU. The phone is expected to be running Android Nougat and feature an 8MP front camera.

The leaks come even as the company announced that HMD Global will be the brand under which they will revive Nokia’s phones. Moreover, Nokia is expected to introduce its interest in virtual reality segment and its new tablet, all hinting the company’s strong come back to consumer electronics.
