Telecom regulatory authority of India has now launched its own speed test app for android phones to keep a track of which telecom operators are adhering to the guidelines of minimum data speeds laid down by TRAI. This step comes after tightening regulatory norms on voice network quality and this will ensure that data quality as also maintained as per TRAI as both services are now used majorly across the nation. Call drops and data speed can now be traceable by giving power to its customers to report and get best services without interruption.

The app named ‘My speed’ has been launched by TRAI and it runs on Android phones running Jellybean and higher versions and is available through the mobile Seva app store. The application will send coverage, data speed and network information along with device and location of the customer to TRAI. This will help the telecom watchdog in creating a virtual network map of each operator and ensuring a uniform data access experience in all areas whether be rural or urban. In some rural areas the services are pathetic and with this move, TRAI will ensure rural customers also have same speed and user experience.

TRAI has defined minimum internet speed that should be delivered to consumers. However, consumers often complain of poor speed. The regulator during its drive test has also found that 3G customers of some operators were getting 2G internet speed most of the time in select cities. This initiative will bring respite to the helpless consumers being exploited by telecom operators.

As of now users rely on speedtest.net where they can check their speed, but with an official announcement of “My speed” by TRAI users can also report manipulation of services by telecom provider directly to TRAI.
